31/01/2007 Flu Pandemic ImminentThe World Health Organization has issued a flu pandemic warning today. It looks like the H5N1 virus will sweep the planet, and possibly arrive in Canada to execute its wrath within three months. Maybe later...scientists are very hesitant to put a specific timing on the situation. (No wonder, viruses seem to have a mind of its own.) Anyway, whatever it is, one should prepare for the pandemic. Wash your hands like a maniac, stock up on water and other essentials, get that stinky Purell stuff the hospitals have on every wall in their corridors, and you might wanna get some hand cream cuz that stuff can dry out your hands. One thing I do recommend is to contact your provincial/federal gov't website for the latest (and more accurate) info on the flu pandemic. Put it under Favorites or something. I know I sound like I have paronoid schizophrenia, but one can't be too cautious in this dept. Especially if you have young children under your care, or if you are taking care of elderly/disabled people. Here's a quick link to a reliable website for those of us who live in Canada: www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/cpip-pclcpi/hl-ps/index.html
I know we as a society think we're invincible...sometimes I feel that way...lol! I know we are in a developed/advanced society, but like I said above, these viruses seem to have a mind of their own. Plus, we don't know how our bodies are gonna react to this terrorist. I would like to suggest to start eating healthier. I heard once that too much sugar can slow down our immune system for awhile. A few hours. But then again, perfectly healthy people die just like that. But enuf rambling. This stuff is reallyreallyreally serious, and one should keep an ear open. 26/01/2007 Mahar Arar OutrageToday our famous Mahar Arar is getting ten million smackaroos for himself as well as financial assistance for goodnes-knows-what-else in compensation for Canada's involvement in deporting him to Syria. On top of that, PM Stephen Harper is also issuing a formal apology right at this very moment. Arar first appeared in the news sometime in 2003 after Ottawa Citizen journalish Juliet O'Neille who published the details of Arar's case leaked from security sources. He later became known as the top newmaker in 2004.
Interestingly enough, Arar was actually born in Syria. In 1988, he came to Canada at the age of 17 with his parents to avoid mandatory military service. He went to university, married, got a job, had kids, and enjoyed Canada. Sounds innocent enough.
In October 2002, after vacationing with his wife's family in her home country of Tunisia, Arar got detained by the Americans and deported to Syria. Simply because he was seen with then-alleged al-Qaida member Abdullah Almalki. (Almalki was later aquitted.) Of course, Almalki was suspected of being a terrorist because he was seen with alleged terror suspect Ahmed Said Khadr. Khadr, who managed a Canadian NGO Human Concern Int'l, was suspected to have used the charital funds to help fund al-Qaida. Of course, heh heh, he WAS an al-Qaida leader and an associate to Osama bin Laden until his death in 2003. Well, all this valuable info/connections/whatever got both American and Canadian officials into a frenzy and alleged Arar was a terror suspect. In a way, I kinda agree with them because they have a right to be vigilant in protecting us American/Canadian citizens. Well, it's really a hard call, as I don't know even a hundredth of the info the intelligence knows.
So Arar's being compensated and apologized to and blah blah blah, and if he's innocent, isn't acquittal and having his name cleared and maybe finalcial assistance in paying part of his legal bills enough? I mean, Canada already took him off the no-fly list and cleared his name. The head of the RCMP Guilliano Zeppardelli formally (and publicly) apologized back in December, just before he stepped down. And now he's getting ten million bucks...for HIMSELF??? Sheesh! How about sending me some of that money so I can provide a three-bedroom place to live for my family, and we do NOT have ANY connections to terrorism...100% guarenteed, Mr. Harper? I'm sorry. This is compensation gone too far. No, no, no...correction: This is our tax dollars paying for compensation gone too far. Remember, Mr. Harper, we DO have a $481 billion national debt. 15/01/2007 Grey Hair and Other RamblingsI recently joined this reallyreallyreally cool website groupy thingy. It's got forums, a chat room, and even a weekly online church service. It's a Messianic Jewish website (you'll find a link to that website in my "Cool Websites" list) and offers a unique view of Christianity. So I joined and registered and downloaded and whatever else geeky computer freaks do, and even did a couple of posts in the forum. My username is sillyhousewife, in case anyone's interested. It even got an online Bible on it.
My mother-in-law noticed that I have a few grey hairs on my head. Awwwwww...I like my rich brown hair! It's a really neat color...mostly dark brown with strands of medium brown and dark blonde all through it. (That is, if you look closely.) Guess I'll put the blame on my hubby and kids for the grey hairs...hehehe.
So Dubya's sending 21,000 more troops into Iraq. (or at least trying to) What I don't understand is WHY are those guys still in Iraq when Sadly Insane's dead and Iraq's got a new gov't? Well, lemme tell ya THIS, bub! You better not involve Canada in this!
Finally, us Nova Scotians are gonna get our traditional winter back. In fact, Environment Canada even posted a winter storm watch/warning for tonight. Well, it's about time! The cold weather'll kill most of that crazy norovirus that's been terrorizing the Atlantic provinces for the past few months or so. 11/01/2007 More Weather and PoliticsThe weather is still dominating the headlines. Seems like Mother Nature's sick and tired of competing with Mother Politics and threw her wrath around. Everything (almost) here in Canada is totally backwards: Here in Nova Scotia we're getting BC weather, and BC is getting NS weather. So far, BC has been walloped with 14 major storms...some hurricane-strength. (shudder) Stanley Park is NOT having very much luck...some of the trees that are being toppled over are five hundred years old! Then if that's not enough, Mother Nature sends her wrath to the Prairie Provinces with blowing snow, high winds, and minus 40 degree windchills. Just recently a couple is found frozen due to the storm. My sincere condolences go out to the family.
Then there's local politics: Former NS Cabinet Minster (human resources) Earnie Fage was drinking over the Christmas holidays and did a fender-bender then "left the scene of an accident" (in policenese) So instead of boring you with all the "juicy" details, I'll just say it's turning into a scandel, even though Fage did volunteerly stepped down as Cabinet Minister. It's hilarious when you turn on the news and there are these shaken video footage (you can tell the cameramean are running) and there are these gov't officials walking veryveryvery fast trying to look dignified with a bunch of mics in their faces with (in the background) reporters firing off these stupid questions and you can tell by their voices that they're skipping backwards...I can imagine the scenes now...great YouTube video material! LOL But no, seriously, all this crazy drama over an admitted fender-bender is eerily similar to a soap opera. Get a life, folks! 04/01/2007 Talkin' about the weather and politics...Some action is starting to stir at Parliament. PM Stephen Harper shifted his cabinet ministers around. Environment Minister Rona Ambrose lost her post (Whoo-hoo!) to some guy I don't know from Adam. Hopefully The-Guy-Who-Took-Her-Spot will untangle whole environment mess.
We've been having spring-like weather so far this winter. That's warm for...January, is it? LOL Rumor has it some golf courses will be open around Nova Scotia this Sunday...IT'S GONNA BE SUNNY AND 12 DEGREES CELCIUS!!! Oh, btw, is it REALLY January??? On a more serious note, Hubby predicted more hurricanes this summer. Shhhh, dear...let's not talk too loud...
Speaking of weird weather, BC just had a bout of freezing rain...and was left with thick black ice. I saw the news clip tonight...the salt truck was sliding! LOL Finally, the news guy said, it had to back up and put salt on part of a road backwards a little way before it could resume normalcy.
I was surfing on YouTube, and me, keeping tabs on world events, came across this Sadly Insane video. It was the actual execution of Saddam itself...y'know, the trap door falling and him falling thru...made my stomach turn. I was so disgusted that I camplained to the YouTube big guys and demanded that they pull it off the website. I then made a video protest, urging fellow users to do the same. Now, whether the Big Guys'll listen, that's another story. 01/01/2007 New Year's ResolutionsHappy New Year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
