Virginia Tech Shooting and Gun Control

So the Virginia Tech killer was Seung Hui Cho...who has a history of mental illness and was known to police.  As an American, he could just go to a pawnshop and purchase two guns, no problems, hardly no questions asked.  In Canada, England, and Austrailia, we all got tough gun laws.  I really hope the States will toughen up thier laws.  There's too  much violence.  Here's a couple of website addresses for anyone who's interested.  http://www.canada.com/topics/news/features/virginiashootings/index.html

Also, here in Canada, fifteen police officers were officially recognized for their bravery in the Dawson College shooting (Montreal, earlier this year).  I was really pleased to see them appealing to the Feds for them to keep the gun registry alive.  I sure hope they do.  But don't think they will.  One of PM Stephen Harper's platform points was to scrap the gun registry.  But can we really afford that with our lives?  I know violence is a fact of life, but MUST we make it easier for people to obtain firearms???

    Virginia Tech and Safety

Yesterday a lone gunman killed 32 people and injured dozens others before killing himself at Virginia Tech School.  My heart really goes out the the school and the families of the victims.  This is the worst mass killing ever in North American history.  Every time they mention it on the news, I force myself not ot cry.  You'd think after hearing nothing but bad news from all sources, you'd be tough, and it won't bother you.  Well, it does.  There was even a Nova Scotian teacher killed there.

I have two kids.  They are still in daycare.  Violence hits the schools of all levels in both Canada and the US.  Am I worried? Yeah, I am.  Big time.  I mean it's to the point that school boards are now working on "Code Blue", a lock-down system that will drill the kids to hunker down and take certain measures to avoid death.  Or, rather, try to.  So, my son's going to school next year, and that will be on my mind.  Why, oh WHY!!! are people so cruel and violent?  If it's not a mentally-ill person, then it'll be an Islamic terrorist.  Scary.

To our Troops in Afghanistan, and Other Stuff

Whew!  It's been a loooooooooooooong time since I blogged...but I have a valid excuse...I've been busy!  LOL  Okay, my daughter had an eye surgery, millions of doctor appointments between the two kids, getting ready for my son to go to school in September, assessment placements for both children at the special school for blind/deaf kids...really...a full-time job!

As everyone watched the ceremonies in France to honor the 3,598 Canadians killed while wrestling Vimy Ridge Hill out of the hands of the Germans 90 years ago, news of six Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan that very same day made the news. Yikes.  And today, two more Canadians were killed...both sets of killings were bombs set by the Taliban.  I sit and watch the news, and I'm fighting back tears.  My heart really goes out to the eight families affected.  In the back of my mind, I'm wondering if this mission in Afghanistan really is working...I mean, you're dealing with militant Muslims.  Those Taliban fighters will blow themselves up even if they are in Islamic-controlled countries whose gov't has different Islamic viewpoints than those of the Taliban.

Also, today, a military mom just got back a card she'd sent to her son in Afghanistan, citing insufficent postage!  Sheesh!  She has always put two 50-cent stamps; and Canada Post want six lousy cents!  All this talk about supporting our troops and Canada Post has the nerve to "slap" this poor mom in the face with this insult!  Well, if she's reading this, I want her to know I support her.

Well, reports of 200 stowaways being smuggled into Canada from Italy got the Federal Defense up in arms.  What's really interesting is...after riot squads swarming the ship like ants; fancy-schmancy RCMP motorboats zooming around the Halifax Harbor; Halifax's very own famous immigration lawyer Lee Cohen ready to represent the lot of 'em and giving news reporters interviews; NS Department of Defense getting the heads up by the Federal Department of Defense; and tight security present on the dock---and (drumroll, please) no stowaways nor contraband!  Rolling On The Floor Laughing My Seating Apparatus Off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Sooooooooooo...to cover up the embarrassment, Defense Minister Stockwell Day goes, "Well, it was a good exercise for the RCMP, anyway" then slaps the poor shipping company with the search bill.  Political show-offs just in case Liberal Leader Stephane Dion decide to try and trigger a spring/summer general election.
